Restaurant Review: Six by Nico Belfast
I’m excited to share this one with you all! Since seeing the Six by Nico trailer for “The Chippie” experience a few weeks ago, I knew this was going to be an experience but I was worried was it going to be more style over substance. I was relieved to find out it was both stylish and delicious, it’s a fantastic fine dining experience which will both feed your senses and your stomach.
I was kindly invited to try the six course tasting menu on Thursday and was gifted not only the fantastic six course meal but also the wines paired with it so I’m marking this one as #AD-GIFTED. If you want to try out the menu below it is actually quite reasonably priced the tasting menu is £28 per person and the matching wine is £25 per person. The menu changes every six weeks and I’m keeping my eye out for the next menu as I would definitely return and pay, as it’s more than worth it!
Six by Nico is located on Waring street right in the heart of the busy Cathedral quarter, the restaurant has a warm glow and is inviting, with warm dark woods full of wine lining the walls and the glow of industrial light fittings. But it has a few quirky differences the chefs are clearly visible at the pass and you can actually get a close up of your dish on screens mounted to the walls as they cook. However it took me quite a while to notice this as our very attentive waiting staff welcomed us and explained every step of the meal and wines. The dining experience took almost 2 and half hours so it’s the perfect treat for a foodie and the restaurant is able to provide for everyone, on the night I dined I spoke to friends who are gluten free, dairy free, vegetarians and vegans.
On to the food experience: it started with prosecco and the most moreish first course “Chips and Cheese”. How would I describe this…it’s like a very light and fluffy cheese soup but with the curry oil on top it also hits your nose! I loved it and in fact my whole table loved it. It set our taste buds up for more tasty treats!
Second Course named “Scampi” was anything but scampi and chips. Monkfish cheeks with the most amazing pea emulsion with wild garlic. I’m not adverse to the odd pea but I have to say I would happily eat that pea and garlic combo everyday. I would certainly get me to eat my greens!
Third course was the most amazing deconstructed “Steak Pie”, beef shin which just fell apart with the touch of my fork and to complete the pie, mushrooms in red wine, burnt onion ketchup and a glazed puff pastry. This to me was the star course of the six, I would have happily licked my plate!! Served with The Gatekeeper Red from South Africa I was in heaven!
Fourth course named “Fish Supper ” was anything but your local Chip shops top seller. Nico’s Fish Supper is cod with Samphire and beer pickled mussels, the flaky fish just fell apart and I’m not normally a big mussels fan but I cleaned my plate, (maybe I should cook them in beer?) again this was delicious!
Five course and I was starting to feel full, our waiter asked if we would like to take a break but we had actually been served in a nice pace so we declined. Drinks and chat flowed between courses and then we saw a cloche full of smoke arrive! This course is the boomerang moment, theatre and food! Phones at the ready the cloche was removed and we smelt the “smoked sausage”. A trio of pork served with celeriac, caramelised apple and black pudding, another delight to all the senses.
Being a sugar fiend and dessert lover the six and final course was highly anticipated. Named the “Deep Fried Mars Bar” this dessert should really come with a warning, the carmella chocolate served with orange sorbet and cocoa nibs is an orgasmic sensation for a desert lover. I honestly couldn’t speak for a few moments!! I really would love to have this ago, Nico can you send this one to my office please!!
So overall I loved the food, service and atmosphere of Six by Nico, if this is the first menu I’m looking forward to see what’s to come and I am definitely a convert to the Six by Nico dining experience!
